Energy Tip

Top Ten Tips for Heating Your Home, from Bion Howard’s web site http://www.energybuilder.com/

“Tip #2 - Install (a) set-back digital (programmable) thermostat on your heating system or heat pump. Every degree of set “back” for heating may save up to 8% on central heating energy usage.” (Bion’s #1 Tip - “Obtain an energy audit…”)

Building Diagnostic Tools

In our Energy Audits, we use the latest building science tools to obtain a more detailed analysis of the issues in your home or building. With these tools we can identify the specific conditions that have the most impact on your building's energy  performance.

In addition, infrared thermometers, combustion gas detectors, air velocity meters, circuit testers and other diagnostic tools are available when needed for special situations.

Blower Door Infiltration Test

Atticus and blower This critically important diagnostic test measures and identifies the air leaks that allow surprisingly large amounts of air to escape from your building – air which you have already paid to heat or cool. In most buildings, hidden leaks around the chimneys, shats, pipe chases and structural connections to attics and basements account for more loss of conditioned air than windows and doors.

The Blower Door enables us to calculate the air leakage and identify specific gaps, holes, seams and cracks that need to be sealed for improved energy performance. For the majority of buildings, air sealing is often the single most effective step you can take to stop energy loss and to start saving dollars.

Infrared Camera Inspection

By scanning your home or building with the IR camera, our auditors can quickly spot a variety of hidden problems, including missing insulation, cold or hot air pathways and moisture issues. The camera takes thermal images which clearly depict temperature differences between areas. Since the camera is highly sensitive and accurate, it provides valuable information in all seasons.

The IR Camera detects cold air (blue areas) leaking into the home at the stair skirt.

Used together, the Blower Door and Infrared Camera effectively identify your most critical issues, directing us to the best, most cost effective opportunities for improvement.
